The Changing Views on Aprons

When the word aprons is mentioned in a conversation, the first thing that comes to mind would be French maids, nannies, cooks or grandmothers. The bottom line is that apron is associated with household activities especially that of the kitchen. Since that is the common notion of aprons, a person wearing such garment is seen lowly in the society. They are viewed as servants thus they are taken for granted. However, the view on apron and what it represents is steadily changing.

The art of cookery is now being emphasized and highlighted in the media. People seem to crave for cooking shows, contests about cooking skills, and food of various cultures. These shows about chefs, cooks and food stirred the common perceptions on cooking and kitchen wares and garments. Suddenly, an apron which is taken for granted is now the star of the show. Apron is seen everywhere, in advertisements, in the television programs, in the fashion shows. It is now an industry by itself.

The reason for the stardom of the humble garment is that it is used as a symbol for success in the art of cooking. Wearing an apron denotes discipline, passion and love for creating good food. Top chefs even give aprons to their apprentices as sign of approval and satisfaction. Therefore, a person wearing an apron is no longer seen as a lowly individual; instead the wearer of the apron commands respect. The apron symbolizes the person’s achievement in the world of cooking. Indeed, the rise of the art of cookery has elevated the status of aprons.
